It’s no secret that we love to spend all of our spare time enjoying Kruger National Park safaris. Not only is the Park right on our doorstep, but we have personally explored every corner and consider it to be South Africa’s – if not Southern Africa’s – most outstanding wildlife park. Here are the top five reasons why Kruger National Park safaris seldom disappoint even the most seasoned of travellers.

Meet the Mighty Big 5

As an iconic stronghold of Africa’s Big 5 (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino), a Kruger safari offers great opportunities to tick these formidable beasts off your animal sightings bucket-list.

Healthy populations of all members of the Big 5 are the main reason why the Kruger National Park is considered South Africa’s premier safari destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

There are elephants, buffalo and lions within the park and are all relatively easily seen. While rhino and leopard are a little harder to spot, their numbers are still good.

Spot Feathered Beauties

With over 500 bird species recorded – resident and migratory – in Kruger, this park is an absolute delight for birdwatchers. In fact, the species diversity in Kruger represents roughly 60% of South Africa’s total species count.

Migratory species flock annually to Kruger from other parts of Africa, Europe and Asia to breed and nest during the summer months. The bateleur eagle, saddle-billed stork and lilac-breasted roller are commonly seen, while the elusive Pel’s fishing owl and endangered lappet-faced vulture make for special sightings.

Capture that Perfect Shot

Kruger is an incredibly beautiful part of South Africa made up gentle slopes covered largely of woodland and grassland savanna.

This scenery makes for a striking backdrop, particularly at sunrise and sunset, for photographers wanting to capture both traditional and more unusual wildlife shots.

Fascinating insects, reptiles and birds call for a magnified perspective, whereas the interesting botanical and geological variety are the subject of a picturesque, wide-angle landscape image.

Safari in Style

We arrange all of our private Kruger National Park safaris for guests at umSisi House, which include expert guides and delicious picnic meals.

As the park is so vast, having a guide that knows where the best spots for wildlife sightings and stunning views is key to having a successful Kruger safari experience.

Our trips normally enter through Numbi Gate in the south-western section of the park, where the higher altitude provides panoramic perspectives over the Lowveld to the east and granite foothills to the north and south. This is a high rainfall area in the park which cultivates a wide diversity of plant and animal species.

Add on a Neighbouring Destination

A Kruger safari is in itself an excellent activity choice for every type of occasion whether travelling as a family, a couple or solo. But it can also be combined with other nearby attractions and neighbouring countries as travel to and from the Kruger Lowveld region is convenient and efficient.

The region boasts easy access to an impressive road network as well as Skukuza and Kruger Mpumalanga airports. So consider combining your Kruger safari with a visit to the iconic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe or an opportunity to lie on the sandy beaches of Mozambique before jetting off home.
